Can chiropractic care help my child’s ear infections?
Did you know that the most common illness affecting babies and young children is ear infections? In fact, 80% of children will be diagnosed with an ear infection before their 3rd birthday which explains why it is the number one reason for visits to the pediatrician with 10 million new cases every year.
An ear infection occurs when the eustachian tubes (the small tubes that run from the ear to the back of the throat) become swollen or blocked, causing fluid to build up. They are typically caused by a bacterial or viral infection that affect the inner, middle or outer ear. Symptoms include ear pain, impaired hearing, dizziness or impaired balance. Ear problems can be excruciating and painful for anyone, but especially for kids. The most common treatments for ear infections is endless rounds of antibiotics or the drastic step of surgery for tubes.
After researching less invasive alternatives, more parents are now considering chiropractic care to help their children with these chronic ear infections. “Many chiropractors believe that there is a strong link between the birthing process and recurrent ear infections…During the birthing process, cervical (neck) vertebrae can become misaligned, disrupting nerve function, which can affect the eustachian tube.” (healthychild.com)
“Chiropractic mobilizes drainage of the ear in children, and if they can continue to drain without a buildup of fluid and subsequent infection, they build up their own antibodies and recover more quickly.” (Dr. Joan Fallon)
In one study, 46 children ages 5 and under were given regular chiropractic adjustments to see if A) the patients’ symptoms improved while under chiropractic care, B) how many treatments were needed to reach improvement, and C) which factors were associated with early improvement. The results from this study showed 93% improvement of all symptoms in its participants. 75% of the group improved in 10 days or fewer and 43% improved with only 1 or 2 treatments.
Chiropractors use gentle, non-invasive adjustments that can improve a child’s health by providing:
- Improved coordination
- Relief from discomfort and pain
- Improved flexibility
- Decreased inflammation
Ear tubes won’t prevent all ear infections, but they can make them milder and happen less often. In some cases the tubes might need to be put in again.
Just because tube surgery is common does not mean that it is necessary. By choosing chiropractic care you are fixing the problem at the source so that the repetition of symptoms is eliminated. Avoid anesthesia, surgery, pain medication, and infection and take your child to a chiropractor. Not only can they say bye-bye to ear infections, but they will also be supporting their bodies while they endure many of the normal growing pains that come with being a child.
