The Three T’s That Will Send Your Body into Dis-ease
Subluxations in the body refer to a slight misalignment of the vertebrae. Chiropractors treat these subluxations to help improve the health of their patients and to prevent any further further health issues from manifesting in the body.
The term “subluxation” was coined by Daniel David Palmer (D.D.), who is known as the founder of chiropractic after performing the the first chiropractic adjustment in 1985. In his 1910 text, The Chiropractor’s Adjuster, D.D. Palmer identified the causes of vertebral subluxation as the “Three T’s”. These “T’s” included thoughts, trauma, and toxins. D.D. Palmer’s work and studies regarding chiropractic care are the reason that this approach is what it is today. His writings on healing and his philosophical approaches to “disease” and “dis-ease” date back to 1886.
These basic concepts that he introduced to the profession that he founded have survived the test of time. So how do the three T’s cause subluxation and affect the function of the nervous system as a whole?
“Thoughts” refer to Emotional and Psychological Stress. When our brain senses harm from a physical injury, stressful thought or exposure to a toxin, it shifts into protection mode, also referred to as the fight or flight response.
When you’re under stress, your body goes through lots of different chemical, and physiological reactions that can have a negative effect on your health and a negative effect on your spine.
Physical stress on the body can come from an injury, repeated improper use, or compensation within the body. For pregnant mothers, it can also come from the birth process as that can be a traumatic experience for the body. The physical pain of experiencing a car accident may also prompt someone to visit a chiropractic visit because they are experiencing the physical pain of being thrown out of alignment.
The body will logically try to stabilize the area with muscle splinting, which will heal in this configuration unless something is done to restore integrity to the area.
Apart from direct force causing a bone to misalign, the body can experience chemical stress from chemical exposure and emotional stresses in such a way as to cause subluxations. These misalignments and alternations in spinal curvature in spinal curvature are only a result of the internal, neurological response to the overwhelming presence of the three T’s.
Toxins can be taken from the air we breathe as a result of environmental pollution. There are more and more toxins found in our cleaning products, makeup, and self-care items that are absorbing directly thru our skin and proving to be major endocrine disruptors. The food we eat contains many different kinds of chemicals which contributes to many of the food allergies that many people, especially children, are facing today.
Risk for Chronic Illness
70-90% risk of chronic illness comes from environmental exposures (Rappaport, Stanford in Science, 2010). The other 10-30% comes from your genetic makeup.
Getting stuck in the cycle of the 3 T’s will ensure that your body will experience nerve interference, inflammation, and irritation. Each of these will have their own set of side effects that may include body aches and pains, gastrointestinal complications, mood disorders, weight gain, and a lowered immune system. Your body will experience “dis-ease”.
Supporting Your Body
Getting adjusted by a chiropractor will help to remove the subluxations in the body and allow your body to function the way it was designed. Innately, your body will always try to heal. It is easier, however, to heal when the interference is removed and your body is given the proper environment to recover.
Supporting your body towards your best self requires more than just getting adjusted. Making a conscious effort to remove any of the T’s that you can will help to keep your body in a state towards wellness. Physical activity, removing toxins in your food and home products, and finding ways to de-stress are all crucial to maintain a cycle of wellness.
